It is said that one of the biggest determinants of a man’s physical attractiveness is his height. Not only that, height is also associated with social status, as taller people are more likely to be promoted at work.
Okay, so what can you do if you’re vertically challenged? Read these 9 powerful tricks for gentlemen that are looking to add a couple of inches to their stature:
1. Vertical Stripes
Wearing vertical stripes draw the eyes up and down to enhance height. Horizontal stripes do the opposite. Pinstripes are almost always a good move.
2. Proper Posture
There are multiple benefits to having a proper posture. Not only can it help make a good first impression as you’ll be perceived as more confident, but also having a proper posture will make you look taller.
3. Well-Fitted Clothing
In addition to appearing more fashion savvy, rocking well-fitted clothing will give you the appearance of height. If there is a lot of excessive room in your clothing, it’ll look like you still have some growing to do.
4. Dress Shoe with Moderate Heel
This one is a bit of a slippery slope. You definitely don’t want to look like you’re wearing platform shoes. As such, you must be careful about choosing the right style. For best results, stick with black loafer-style pumps or boots.
5. Avoid Shorts and Short-Sleeved Shirts
Unless it’s blazing hot outside, avoid shorts and short-sleeved shirts. The usual reason shorter men are lacking height is because they have shorter limbs. So do not draw attention to your limbs by wearing shorts and short-sleeved shirts.
6. Add Height to Your Hairstyle
By trimming the sides of your hair and leaving plenty on top, you can give yourself some height. The extra volume on top combined with trimmed sides will give you an extra inch or two. This tip works especially well if you use a nice hair product to create a spiky style. Just remember to keep it classy. Always.
7. Skinny Ties
A skinny tie creates a slim, vertical line that draws the eye up and down. This concept is very similar to wearing vertical stripes. Thicker ties have more width, which reduces the effectiveness of this tactic.
8. Solid Colors and Small Patterns
Large patterns have a tendency to overwhelm and dwarf the person wearing them. This is no good if you’re trying to appear taller. Solid colors and small patterns create visual interest without reducing the wearer’s height.
9. Keep Details ‘Higher Up’
Accessories such as bow ties, pocket squares, and certain jewelry (necklaces and lapel pins…check these mini bow ties out) can be utilized to make you look taller. When you wear details higher up, it encourages an observing eye to move up from your feet toward your head, causing the eye to take in more height.
Always remember that height doesn’t make the man. The most important is to be confident because being short and being ‘little’ are two very different things.
