What Not To Wear: 11 Fashion Don’ts

There’s no shame in making a fashion mistake here and there — even celebrities regularly featured on best-dressed lists have been known to do so. You can, however, drastically reduce the number of style no-no’s you make by simply being aware of the common ones. Here we’ve listed 11 fashion mistakes men make:

The only time these are acceptable are working out, lounging at your pad, and during finals week.  Other than that, don’t bring them out.  Click here for a potential exception.

Improper Tie Length

A gentleman’s tie should always end at the center of his belt buckle.  Wearing a tie that’s too short or too long can make a man look incompetent.

Unless you’re going for a mafia look, a watch, ring, and maybe a bracelet are plenty.  Click here for watch ideas.

Wrinkled Clothing

We are not saying that people consciously choose to wear wrinkled clothing.  However, it looks sloppy and unprofessional when it happens.  Hang up or fold your clothing right after you dry them.  Pro-tip: if your shirt is wrinkled and you’re running late, you can throw it into the dryer with a small wet towel and run it for 10 minutes or so.  When it comes out, it’ll be unwrinkled.  Downy Wrinkle Releaser is also another quick fix.

Wearing Socks with Sandals

Why?  Just why…

Backpack + Suit

If you are not in college anymore, it’s time to upgrade to a messenger bag.

Tank Top with No Muscles

Come on, now.  If you’re looking to pack on a few pounds of muscle mass, click here

Oversized Clothing

The it’s-cool-to-sag-your-pants phase is dead.  Swimming in your clothing is not a good look.  Wear clothing that accentuates your best features.

Tight Clothing

Conversely, wearing clothing that looks like it’s been been hit by a shrink ray is a big no no.  Your shirt should not show your belly when you stretch and your pants should not cut off the circulation in your legs (including your third one).

Non-Dress Socks with Dress Shoes

One of the biggest mistakes in men’s style.  Avoid this like the plague.

Overbearing Brand Names

If someone looks at you and sees a barrage of brand names, you need to rethink your style.  We are not saying that reppin’ your favorite brand is a bad thing; just don’t go overboard.

Yes, Antlet. Having contrast in your outfit is almost never a bad idea. Thanks for the insight!

Very true…thanks for the comment, Don!

Agree on all of these- especially the last! Nothing worse than looking like you have been sponsored.

    Thank you.
So true, it’s those athletic socks that look completley off and out of place with dressy outfits, whatever their color :).
Personally I like the white sock when I feel I need another point of light in the dress other than the white button shirt.
I see them as similar as the wrists of the sleeve of the white shirts coming out of the black or dark gray- blue coat, being purposely longer than the sleeves of the coat. The white socks replicate the same effect on the ankle, to me, and that’s a visual effect I always liked.
Not sure I would go for it everytime I dress up, but I’d definitely consider it and go for it sometimes.
That I know they should not be too visible when standing, but only when sitting, because the pant hem shouldn’t rise much above the shoe, when standing.
But it’s ok they can be seen a bit when standing and a bit more when walking, i guess :), especially if the black shoes are loafers.

I wonder why so many people who write about style would ban the white sock no matter what, it’s curious, they’re so against it, maybe cause they think about when they are worn with sandals ^_^.

Antlet, thank you for the comment. Yes, there are definitely white/off white dress socks…those are fine to wear with dress shoes. Just make sure you’re not wearing athletic socks (white, black, or any other color) with dress shoes.

Nice tips. About the socks to be paired with dress shoes, it’s true, many white socks are athletic socks with a characteristic texture, they certainly don’t go well with dress shoes.

There are white dress socks as well, that I knew, though, which didn’t look that bad with those dressy outfits :).

    Most definitely!

Of course, an exception to “Backpack + Suit” is the standard after-work BASE jumping.
